Storage Basics Overview
Location of the Facility
Location is something you have to judge for yourself. The convenience of a local storage facility is only a good choice if you need regular access to your belongings. You may also consider a location closer to work or an area you spend most of your time in. If you are only looking for long-term storage, you'll probably be better off finding a unit with more space for a lower price.
Mobile Storage or Self-Storage?
Mobile storage gives you the ability to relocate quickly or move around with your belongings. However, they're pretty specialized and won't be needed for most of your storage needs. Self-storage facilities offer many more benefits including: increased security with surveillance cameras and gated entry, options for temperature-controlled units when storing sensitive goods, and more complete insurance coverage options and inclusions.
Hours of Access
You may require 24/7 access to your storage unit or you may have other access requirements. Get detailed information from the storage facility so you know exactly what days and what times you are allowed onsite. Restricted access times aren't always considered a downside. Often they're an added security measure and extra peace of mind.
Find out what the storage facility does to protect your belongings. For your most expensive investments, you may want to find a facility that offers extra surveillance or guard protection. See if the facility has any other recommendations for security products you can use on your storage unit to keep intruders out. It's also a good idea to take note of what surrounds the storage facility. Other businesses or busy intersections can help deter theft.
