Best Practices for Storing Furniture in a Non-Climate Controlled Unit
Unfortunately, not all storage facilities offer climate-controlled units. Storing furniture without the protection of climate control increases the risk for damage due to humidity, extreme heat or freezing temperatures. Climate-controlled units are generally preferable for long term furniture storage, but when these units are too far out of the way or over budget, it’s important to stay informed about how you can protect your furniture from the elements independently. Here are a few tips from your storage experts at Executive Self Storage.
We recommend you disassemble all wooden furniture before storing it to minimize the likelihood of damage. This means removing all table legs, headboards, footboards and drawers and storing them separately if space permits. Collect all screws and other hardware in labeled baggies for easy reassembly. Finally, clean and woodwax every part of your furniture to shield it against humidity.
Be sure to clean all upholstered sofas, couches and chairs to reduce the possibility of mildew or mold growing. Gently wipe down all surfaces with an antibacterial cleaner that’s designed for use on fabrics. When you’re finished, allow time for the cleaner to air dry before moving it to your storage unit.
Carefully seal all wood and upholstered furniture in plastic wrap or shrink wrap to protect it from the elements. Use masking tape to hold the plastic in place, taking care not to let it adhere to the furniture. This has the added bonus of shielding your furniture against wood burrowing insects and vermin too!
